Special Session on ENERGY-EFFICIENT NETWORKING
Sustained by the raising ecological concerns and by the increasing cost of energy, the issue of energy efficiency has become of paramount importance in all industry sectors. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a double role in this respect. On one hand, it is one of the recognized means to improve efficiency in the production, distribution and consumption of energy itself. On the other hand, it is a large consumer of energy on its own, to operate both computing and networking resources. Whereas the use of ICT in the so-called “Smart Grid” addresses the first aspect above, “Energy-Efficient” or “Green” Networking embraces all that is concerned with the energy-efficient transport of information, including wireless and wired networking technologies, as well as high-speed interconnection of computing devices in data centers.

The goal of this Special Session on Energy-Efficient Networking is to provide a high-level international forum where people active in this exciting and timely topic can exchange ideas and get together in a very focused single-track meeting, in an atmosphere fostering discussion and the development of ideas for future collaboration. At the same time, the intent of the organizers is to bring green networking research issues to the attention of a very lively and reactive local research community, to get more people involved in international cooperation in the field.

The session will host both invited and contributed papers covering, but not limited to, the following aspects:

  • Dynamic adaptation techniques
  • Smart sleeping
  • Energy-efficient routing
  • Energy-QoS tradeoff
  • Re-engineering solutions

Special Session on SATELLITE NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGY
In the framework of the International Conference on Communications and Electronics (ICCE 2012) a Special Session on Satellite Navigation Technologies will be organized.

In recent years Satellite Navigation experienced a dramatic growth among the scientific and the economic communities. Satellite Navigation became an enabling technology for many of the most common and used commercial and industrial applications. For this reason, new satellite navigation systems at both global and regional levels, such as Galileo (EU), Compass (China), IRNSS (India), QZSS (Japan), are being designed and developed. As a natural consequence, existing Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) such as Navstar GPS (USA) and GLONASS (Russia) are rapidly evolving to provide new capabilities. All the systems are intended to be fully operational by 2015, making available more than a hundred satellites for positioning, navigation and timing purposes. It will be the beginning of the so called Multi-GNSS era. These systems will offer many new signals for different types of services ranging from open access, commercial and safety-of-life to public regulated for various users worldwide. Furthermore, the co-existence of these systems can be considered as an opportunity to improve the availability, accuracy and robustness of positioning services. In fact, the negotiations on interoperability among system operators have been started.

South East Asia will be in a very peculiar condition in the following years. The region will be covered by many different systems, both global and regional: GPS (USA – Global), Galileo (EU – Global), GLONASS (Russia – Global), Compass\Beidou (China – Global), QZSS (Japan – Regional), GAGAN (India – Regional). South East Asia will experience the multi-GNSS environment at its edge. From this perspective, the time is ready to emphasize the advantages of this Multi-GNSS constellation, both for research and for industries. Thanks to the Multi-GNSS, new possibilities for R&D and commercial applications will arise as the systems become operative.

This Special Session on Satellite Navigation Technology is a great opportunity to meet key persons in sat-nav R&D and applications in South East Asia as well as finding out the latest trends in research and technologies. The session aims to put in contact researchers creating new links and sharing views.

Contributed papers are solicited describing original works in satellite navigation and related technologies. Topics and technical areas of interest include but are not limited to the followings:
