Special Session on «Underwater Acoustic Communications»

  • A special session on Underwater Acoustic Communications will be held in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Communications and Electronics (ICCE 2014).

During the last two decades, significant achievements have been made in the development of underwater acoustic communication systems. These systems will offer a wide array of applications ranging from providing early warnings for natural disasters, remote control of offshore oil and gas platforms over the discovery of new resources up to the mapping of the ocean bottom for detection of objectsor for building subsea structures. Many of the applications under development involve not only point-to-point links, but also network configurations enabling real-time communications with swarms of autonomous underwater vehicles and submarines. Emerging underwater acoustic networks will consist of both stationary and mobile nodes. They are located on underwater vehicles and robots, which are equipped with sensors, sonars, and underwater video cameras. An onshore system operator will be able to get access to the underwater acoustic network via a wireless link to a central node that is placed on a surface station. The challenge of the network is to manage the exchange of a variety of data, including control, telemetry, and video data, between the network nodes in an extremely hostile environment, where only robots can operate.

The objective of this special session is to stimulate technical exchanges in the growing and important field of Underwater Acoustic Communications. It will provide an effective platform for bringing together researchers from industry, academia, and government sharing a common interest in Underwater Acoustic Communications. Prospective works should focus either on physical layer aspects, where principles of communication and signal processing can be combined gracefully to achieve significant performance improvements, or on novel aspects related to underwater acoustic networks.

Topics and technical areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Underwater acoustic channel measurements
    • Characterization and modeling  of underwater acoustic channels
    • Capacity of underwater acoustic channels
    • Design of efficient modulation and coding schemes
    • Signal processing techniques for underwater communications
    • Data compression algorithms for underwater images
    • MIMO techniques for underwater communications
    • Interference cancellation for underwater communications
    • Multi-user underwater communications
    • Mobile underwater wireless networks
    • Ad hoc underwater acoustic sensor networks
    • Protocols for underwater acoustic networks
    • Cross-layer design techniques for underwater acoustic networks.
